The Liverpool City Centre Movement Strategy
The City Centre Movement Strategy, CCMS, is part of this programme with a £73 million package of works to provide a balanced and sustainable transport system that meets the needs of our changing City Centre.
CCMS partners Liverpool City Council, Merseytravel and Liverpool Vision aim to create a world-class City Centre that is safe, attractive, accessible, clean - and one that balances the needs of cars, public transport and pedestrians.
All the works in Liverpool are known collectively as the Big Dig, which is one of the biggest regeneration schemes in Europe, creating 14,000 new jobs and investing £3 billion in Liverpool's redevelopment.
With any major scheme, and in this case many major schemes are ongoing, there is inevitably disruption. The Big Dig website contains full details of all the works ongoing and planned for the city centre and the Getting Around section offers a full rundown of all the changes to traffic movement with alternative routes where possible and is updated on a weekly basis. Visit the Big Dig website.
New Mersey Crossing
After years of lobbying, the New Mersey Crossing, a bridge to span the River Mersey from the Central Expressway in Runcorn, Halton, to the Eastern bypass in Widnes, leading on to Speke Road, has received government approval.
The crossing is being developed to provide an alternative to the Silver Jubilee Bridge, reducing congestion and delays, improving public transport links across the river and make the region more attractive to potential investors and developers.
Building is now programmed to start in 2011 and is expected to be completed by 2014.
